Eco Warriors

The children, staff and governors of the school are committed to developing Ryhall CE Academy as an Eco-School.  Eco-Warriors in  the school have taken on the responsibility of ensuring that we do all we can to protect our environment.

2020-21 was a fantastic year once again for the team; not only because of the amount of work undertaken but also because of the recognition of their hard work through some highly sought after awards which include the following:

1. Revalidation of the Eco Schools Status (Green Flag) (originally awarded in 20218-19).

2. Better Energy School Award - Runner Up (£250 prize fund) for our project 'Little actions + little changes = BIG RESULTS' . In their email to us they shared the following: 'In an incredibly challenging year for schools, we still received entries from over 13,000 children, so being selected to win an Award is a real achievement, especially as standards remained very high this year.  What a lot of great work you've been doing again at Ryhall, even in a very challenging year.  We were really impressed with your field guides to wildlife found around the school, and all your litter picking efforts.  The eco travel initiatives you have started look fantastic and we hope they will continue.  Your Forest School looks like lots of fun too.  Keep up the great work!'

This follows on from our fantastic successes in the previous 3 years where we have now been awarded over £2350 for our hard work in the following competitions:

  • 2020: ’Super Scientists of the Future' was declared the Regional Winner of the Totally Scientific category for schools in northern England (Better Energy School Awards) - £500

  • 2020: ‘Always Active…just not always how we planned’ and ‘Finding the Lost Words’ were Runners-up in the Totally Active and Totally Creative categories respectively, meaning that the school receiving £250 for each of these projects

  • 2019: ‘ Drastic Plastic’ was Highly Commended in the Totally Creative category for schools in northern England - £100

  • 2018: 'Precious Rainforests and One World, Take Care Of It' was declared the Regional Winner in the Totally Scientific for the North Region - £500

  • 2018: entry 'One World: Take Care of It' was declared Runner Up in the Totally Active Category for the North Region - £250

  • 2018: 'Recycled Crafts' was declared Runner Up in the Totally Creative category - £250

Some of the projects undertaken by the Eco-Warriors have been:

  • planting an orchard in the school grounds (with whole school orchard naming competition)

  • the creation of bug hotels; one in the wildlife garden and one for the children to examine and explore daily in EYFS

  • designing and planting a dinosaur garden in the EYFS environment;

  • growing of vegetables to be sold at the school market;

  • managing the raised beds;

  • making bird feeders for the winter birds;

  • tidying up the local community - regular weekly litter picks undertaken by each class;

  • maintaing the 'wildlife garden' (with a lot of help from our green parents).

All the way back in Summer 2015, the Eco-Warriors entered the Rutland Green Cup Competition and were awarded runners-up, earning themselves (and the school), a very well-deserved cash prize. This helped them to purchase a fantastic new composphere for all members of the school to enjoy; it certainly takes some strength to push it around daily.  This was the beginning of many years of whole school commitments to environmental issues.

The Eco-Warriors mission is to make 'green' issues everyone's issues.

Work isn't just limited to the school grounds.  Eco-Warriors like to get themselves busy in the local community whenever and wherever possible.  If you have a community project you would like the children to get involved in, get in touch.

                    The Eco-Warriors work to an annual plan to ensure that we keep 'green' issues as a priority.

They are always looking for help and over the academic year we'll be asking our parents/carers to get involved by helping with our tidy up of the wildlife garden.  There's always some heavier work that we need a few adults for.
