PE & Sport Premium

PE at Ryhall CE Academy plays a vital part of everyday school life. All pupils have two hours of PE timetabled each week to cover the six main areas of the Curriculum which are dance, gymnastics, games, swimming, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous activities. One lesson is taught by the class teacher, the other by a qualified coach from Premier Sport from whom the class teacher can learn new skills.  The coach holds at least a Level 2 Coaching Certificate, holds an enhanced DBS certificate and has received emergency first aid and safeguarding training.  Swimming is offered for children in KS2, with a priority for those who are not yet able to swim 25metres.  A healthy lifestyle is also promoted.  Alongside the PE Curriculum the children have the opportunity to participate in numerous lunchtime and after school sports clubs throughout the year including gymnastics, running club, tag rugby, games club, football, hockey, rounders, netball, zumba, cricket, quiksticks hockey and tennis.

Fun, enjoyment, confidence, competence and self esteem are the forefront of our PE delivery.  Children in Reception and KS1 develop the fundamental skills such as aiming and throwing, balance, co-ordination, control, and movement. In KS2 children are able to use these fundamental skills to develop their knowledge and understanding of invasion games such as football, netball, tag rugby and hockey.  These skills are also transferrable to striking and fielding games such as cricket and rounders, together with net games such as tennis and volleyball. Gymnastics and Dance are taught at all age groups and we are able to offer an opportunity in trampolining to Year 5 & 6 children.

Children are given the opportunity to participate in the local schools leagues (Rutland) and competitions as well as School Games competitions.  As a school we are enjoying increasing success competing at local and regional (cross-country) level.  On a regular basis school fixtures are arranged in netball and football which also enables the children to be proud to represent their school. We also organise in-house team House competitions where the children from each team House compete against one another. These competitions are organised by our pupil House Captains.

As a school we feel community sports links are essential and we have therefore signed up to the Rutland School Sports partnership and work closely with the School Sports Coordinator as well as our colleagues at Casterton College Rutland (CCR). Each year, we ensure that staff receive training to ensure that our PE curriculum and teaching is up to date and will encourage participation of all.
